Ep 7 - A Training Plan for Mental Strength
You wouldn't show up to run a long race without going through training. So why do we expect mental strength to just... happen?
“Mental strength isn’t a personality trait you either have or you don’t. It’s a muscle and like every muscle, it has to be trained to get stronger.”
Here's your training plan for building a stronger mind.
-
Before you start — name your support.
Scaffolding is the structure that holds a building steady while it's being built. The moment the building can stand on its own, the scaffolding comes down. You need the same when you're building mental strength.
New runner? Find a running group — people whose presence tells you this is survivable.
Managing anxiety? A therapist, a coach, or one trusted person who has walked through it.
Learning something new? Anyone who has already done the hard thing you're about to do.
Scaffolding isn't a crutch. It's a construction tool. You're not supposed to need it forever — just until you don't.
-
5 minutes uncomfortable. Then 8 minutes hard. Then stop.
The only way to build mental strength is to do hard things. But hard is relative and you don't start with the hardest thing in the room.
5 minutes of something slightly outside your comfort zone, like a difficult conversation, sitting with discomfort, the thing you keep putting off.
Then 8 minutes of the harder version.
Then stop. That's a session. That's enough for today.
One session doesn't build the muscle. Consistent sessions do. Come back tomorrow.
-
Celebrate showing up — not the result.
Your brain needs to register that the hard thing was worth doing. If you skip the cooldown, your brain files the experience under "unpleasant — avoid repeating."
Put a sticker on the calendar. Sounds childish. Works because your brain responds to gold stars.
Tell your scaffolding group. Send the message, post the photo, announce it.
Narrate what you did. "I did a hard thing." The act of saying it creates a strong identity
Not sure where to start? That first conversation is your scaffolding.
