Ep 8 - You're Not Lazy. Here's What's Actually Getting in the Way.

Marina Minds — You're Not Lazy. Here's What's Actually Getting in the Way.
"You sign up. You show up. You're consistent for weeks — and then life happens. One missed week becomes two, guilt sets in, and starting again feels impossible. Sound familiar?"

You're Doing This Alone
When you only have to answer to yourself, the negotiation is too easy. You wake up tired, it's raining, work was long — and the voice in your head says "skip today, it's fine, no one will know."
The Fix
Find a buddy, a group, or a coach. When someone is waiting for you at the track at 6am, you get up — because now you answer to someone else. This isn't weakness. It's biology. Use that wiring.

You're Doing the Wrong Activity
If you don't genuinely enjoy the activity, you will stop. It's only a matter of time. Someone told you running is the best cardio, or your friends go to badminton, or you saw something online. But none of that matters if it doesn't fit you.
The Fix
Give yourself permission to experiment. Try three things over three months. See what fits your body, your schedule, your temperament. Not what looks impressive — what makes you want to show up again tomorrow.

Pain, Soreness and Small Injuries
Your calves are screaming. Your knees feel off. Every time you sit down you're reminded of yesterday. Your brain says "this is a sign, this is not for me." It's not a sign. It's normal.
The Fix
Learn the difference between soreness and injury. Soreness is dull, widespread, shows up a day after training, and fades. Injury is sharp, localised, doesn't go away. For soreness — rest, move gently, hydrate, sleep. It will pass. Every serious athlete has been through this patch. The other side is where your body starts to feel capable.

Your Goals Are Too Far Away
"I want to lose 15 kilos." "I want to run a marathon." These are beautiful goals — but you can't hold on to them on a Tuesday morning when you don't want to get out of bed.
The Fix
Set a goal that's two to three months ahead — something you can see from where you're standing. Register for a 5K in 10 weeks. Commit to three sessions a week for two months. Short horizon goals give you wins. Wins give you momentum. The long goal takes care of itself if you keep winning the short ones.

You Don't Have a Plan
You just go. You show up and figure it out — and that works for a while. But without a plan, you do the same thing every time. Same distance, same speed, same routine. Your body adapts and stops changing. And you wonder why you're doing this at all.
The Fix
A plan changes the intensity, mixes things up, tells your body new stimulus is coming. You don't need a complicated plan — but you need something that progresses. Build in rest days. Hard days. Easy days. Talk to a coach or use a structured programme. Variety is what keeps your body growing.

Consistency doesn't mean perfection. There will be patches. Weeks where life genuinely takes over — travel, illness, a family situation. Some weeks you simply cannot do what you planned. That is not failure. That is life.

What kills people's fitness journey is not the gap. It's the guilt that comes with the gap — and the guilt that makes the restart feel impossible.

Come Back

If you've missed a week, your first session back is not the session to make up for lost time. It is the session to simply show up.

The body you're building is waiting for you every single time you return.

1
Get a buddy or a group. Accountability is not weakness — it's biology. Use it.
2
Try different activities until you find the one that's actually yours. Three things over three months.
3
Expect soreness. It will pass. Learn the difference between soreness and injury — and don't let normal adaptation be the reason you stop.
4
Set a goal two to three months away — not two to three years. Win the short ones. The long goal takes care of itself.
5
Get a plan. Even a simple one. Something that progresses, varies, and tells your body something new is coming.
And when life happens — because it will — come back. Just come back. That's the whole skill.
